GameFly Rental Chart Highlights: Week Ending January 30

This week's GameFly video game rental charts for North America, specifically relating to games rented via the games-by-mail service for the week ending January 30th, show popularity over multiple game formats. The Xbox 360's grip on the top three of the all-platform rental charts weaken slightly this week. Dead or Alive 4, the next-generation fighter from Tecmo, is still king at the top of the charts, but current-generation titles are edging back into the two slots below it. Eidos' controversial 25 to Life enters the charts at #2, while Peter Jackson's King Kong brings up the rear, still lively even after the movie's momentum trails off. Interestingly, despite being a multiplatform title, this last is entirely fueled by Xbox 360 rentals, as the #3 all-platform game appears in the top 10 of neither the regular Xbox nor the PlayStation 2. #1 on the PS2 in its stead is, surprisingly, Shadow of the Colossus, which has long been hovering around the second- or third-place reaches of the PS2 charts but hasn't climbed to the very top since its October debut. Resident Evil 4 is #2 on PS2, and MVP 06 NCAA Baseball at #3 proves Electronic Arts can have a success even without the MLB license. On Xbox, 25 to Life is #1 most wanted, while Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones stays alive at #2 and Gun continues to hang around the charts at #3. On the Xbox 360-specific list, longtime reigning champion Condemned: Criminal Origins gets knocked back down to #3 with a lead pipe this week. In its place, Dead or Alive 4 delivers the knockout blow at #1, and Peter Jackson's King Kong toys with the corpse for a while at #2. The GameCube charts are all-Mario all the time this week: Super Mario Strikers is still in first place on Nintendo's console, and Mario Party 7 is still #2. Taking over in third place and causing chart-watchers to see triple this week is a resurgence for Mario Superstar Baseball, proving that Nintendo really can't overexploit its most popular character. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Duel Academy, the latest portable game in the popular kids' franchise, is still at #1 on the Game Boy Advance charts, over beefed-up SNES port Final Fantasy IV at #2. Ubisoft's virtual pet sim Dogz finds its way back home this week, clutching a third-place spot tightly in its jaws. On the Nintendo DS, the Wi-Fi Connection again reigns supreme, giving Animal Crossing: Wild World the boost it needs to remain at #1. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the action-RPG starring the famous plumbers and their infant selves, shoots back up to #2, displacing quirky cult sensation Electroplankton down to #3. Finally, on the PSP charts, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is still holding its own at #1 on the PSP list, a reign which may not last much past the PS2 release of the game in March. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo is at #2, and Prince of Persia: Revelations is in third.
