GameTap Unveils 2006 GameTap E3 Picks Winners

GameTap, Turner's subscription-based digital game rental service, today announced the 20 winners of its first annual E3 2006 GameTap Picks awards chosen from last week's E3 event in Los Angeles. The service picked Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the GameCube and Wii as the best adventure game at the show. Other Wii titles, Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Super Smash Bros. Brawl won awards for best platform game, best sports game, and best announcement respectively. Interestingly, the Wii controller itself was awarded as the best surprise at the show. Ubisoft's PlayStation 3 action game Assassin's Creed was awarded the best action game at E3, while Sega and Pseudo Interactive's Full Auto 2: Battlelines for Sony's upcoming next-generation console was identified as the best racing game at the show. Other awards include the long delayed Prey for the Xbox 360 and PC as best shooter, Yakuza for the PlayStation 2 as best fighting game, and Warhammer Mark of Chaos for the PC as the best strategy game. In addition, GameTap named Webzen's Xbox 360 and PC massively multiplayer online game Huxley as the best MMO at E3, while the company's booth itself was called out at the single best booth at the show. The award for best puzzle game was given to Capcom for Capcom Puzzle World for the PSP, the best family game was identified as Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy for multiple platforms, and the best portable game at E3 was awarded to Nintendo's recently released New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. Regarding the best role-playing game at E3, GameTap found two multiplatform games equally deserving: Warner Bros. International and Snowblind Studios' Justice League Heroes, which allows players to take on the role of several notable super heroes from the DC Comics universe, and Activision and Raven Software's Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, which builds upon the mechanics found in X-Men Legends and its sequel. Finally, the online rental service found Square Enix's Slime keychain to be the best swag at the show, and Harmonix and RedOctane's PlayStation 2 rhythm game Guitar Hero II, which was on display in E3's Kentia Hall amidst three days of live musical entertainment, to be the best game GameTap employees want to play right now. However, overall, GameTap found Electronic Art's PC game Spore to be the best game at the show.
