Hirai: 'The Main Premise Of The PS3 Is Video Games'

Kaz Hirai has been talking up the future of the PlayStation 3 again, insisting that despite all the talk of Blu-ray and other multimedia features, the console’s main appeal is still video games --adding that Sony “cannot allow Nintendo to run off alone”.

Kaz Hirai has been talking up the future of the PlayStation 3 again, insisting that despite all the talk of Blu-ray and other multimedia features the console’s main appeal is still video games. "The main premise of the PS3 is video games. That's the absolutely most important thing that we cannot lose sight of," said the Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO in a new interview on Japanese business website NB Online. It was Nintendo though, not Microsoft, which Hirai appeared to be most anxious about, stating that prioritizing the creation of more games was the only way to expand its market position. "We cannot allow Nintendo [to] run off alone," he said in a translation by blog site Kotaku. Earlier in the week, Hirai spoke to UK business paper The Financial Times, in which he played a slightly different tune: emphasizing Home and Blu-ray as one of the primary means by which the PlayStation 3 would avoid the worst ravages of the global recession.
