Eidos Interactive has officially announced that Ion Storm Austin will be licensing Epic's next-generation Unreal engine for development of Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2.
Ion Austin developed the original Deus Ex with the Unreal Tournament engine. "[Using] the original Unreal engine as the foundation for Deus Ex was one of the best decisions we made," commented Ion Austin studio director Warren Spector. "The next-generation Unreal engine offers us even more power, even better tools, and a multi-platform solution." Epic announced several new improvements to the Unreal engine recently, including a hardware-accelerated large-scale terrain system, hardware brushes for improved scene detail, and texture compression for textures up to 2048x2048.
