Iwata: 3DS Firmware Could Update Automatically Via Internet

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata suggested that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS may be able to accept and install firmware updates automatically when connected to the Internet. "As part of the functionality of SpotPass, we're looking into having automatic system updates via the internet," Iwata said during a Q&A session after Wednesday's investor briefing, as reported by Andrisang. While the precise functionality of the automatic Internet updates was not discussed, the mention of Spotpass suggests that such updates could occur any time the system was in range of an open WiFi access point, even if the unit is in sleep mode. Nintendo's current DSi systems can also accept firmware updates from the Internet, but the process requires users to manually initiate the download and update process, a chore Iwata said many players simply neglected to carry out, Andriasang reported. According to the report, Iwata also mentioned that firmware updates for the system could also be included on retail software releases, thanks to increased storage capabilities of 3DS game cards. This would mimic the firmware update setup on the Nintendo Wii, which often requires users to install a disc-based firmware update before playing many Nintendo-produced titles. While Iwata's comments came in response to a questions about piracy prevention on the 3DS, Iwata said the firmware updates could also be used to introduce new functionality for the system.
