Japan Hardware: Wii Edges Out PS3

Nintendo’s DSi reclaimed the top spot on Japan’s hardware charts this week, while the Wii outsold the PS3 after weeks of being topped by Sony’s console. Nintendo’s DSi sold 55,382 units for the week ended May 10, according to tracking firm Media Create’s hardware sales charts. Sony’s PSP followed in second place with 43,009 units sold. It’s the first time in four weeks that the DSi was able to top weekly PSP sales, although Media Create does not lump in DS Lite unit sales with DSi sales. When combined, DSi and DS Lite sales have consistently topped PSP, although Sony’s handheld has given the DS line a run for its money on its own, with no major hardware refresh. The DS Lite sold 7,821 during the week, bringing total DS sales to 63,203. On the home console front, the Wii and PS3 also switched spots after several weeks of Sony dominance. Wii sold 24,397 while PS3 sold 18,483. PlayStation 3 sales received strong sales boosts over the past weeks from releases such as Yakuza 3 and Resident Evil 5 in Japan, as well as the Blu-ray release of the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which included a playable demo of Final Fantasy XIII. Rounding out the hardware charts for the week were PS2 with 5,137 and Xbox 360 with 5,068.
