Catching up after the New Year break, the first weekly Japanese sales chart of 2009 shows Square Enix’s Dissidia: Final Fantasy on PSP returning to the number one spot. There were no new releases in the top 30 for the week ending January 4th, as most of Japan took time off for New Year celebrations. However, sales remained buoyant with the top 10 titles selling over 50,000 units each. But it was Square Enix’s unusual fighting game which dominated, with 104,000 unit sales. Dissidia features characters from a number of separate Final Fantasy titles and has already sold over three-quarters of a million units in Japan. The rest of the top ten saw Nintendo’s more family-friendly titles float to the top of the chart, led by what will be known in the West as Rhythm Heaven on Nintendo DS. Although the original Game Boy Advance title was only a minor hit, the sequel has proven an unexpected hit in 2008, with sales now over 1.5 million units. Sony’s role-playing game exclusive White Knight Chronicles drops from last week’s number one to number six, while the budget re-release of Capcom’s best-selling Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (aka Monster Hunter Freedom Unit) moves up seven places to number nine. Finally, the 20th Anniversary version of railway-themed family board game Momotaro Dentetsu on DS moves up one place to number ten. Hardware figures for the week are expected on Monday.
