Weekly unit sales of Square Enix's DS RPG Dragon Quest IX dropped below 100,000 units for the first time since its July launch in Japan, as Nintendo's Tomodachi Collection took the top spot. Sales of Dragon Quest IX fell to 79,000 units for the week ended August 23, according to Media Create, down from the prior week's 127,000 units. The game has sold over 3.7 million units in Japan to date. The drop in sales pushed the game down from number one to number two on the weekly sales charts. Taking the top spot was Nintendo's Tomodachi Collection for the the DS, selling 83,000 units for the week and 810,000 units to date. Released on June 18, the game lets users interact with their Wii-based Mii avatars on the DS (or create new ones), buying them clothes, feeding them, and generally keeping the Miis happy. The Wii-exclusive Monster Hunter 3 from Capcom is edging closer to the million-units-sold mark in Japan, with 51,000 units sold this week, and 800,000 sold to date. Games falling off of the list from last week include the Namco Bandai PSP game Tales of Vs., Nintendo's DS game Color Changing Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love, and Konami's Penguin no Mondai X: Tenkuu no 7 Senshi for DS. Below are the Japanese sales charts for the week ended August 23:
