Sega has gained its first number one of the New Year in Japan, with the latest iteration of its J-League Pro Soccer Club series for PlayStation 2 registering over 100,000 units sales in its first week. Overall sales in the top fifty have been down on previous weeks though, with Marvelous’s new Harvest Moon title for DS at number two the only other new entry in the top ten, with almost 80,000 unit sales. Both Dragon Quest Monsters – Joker for DS and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for PS2 continue to sell well though with around 57,000 and 49,000 sales, respectively. Wii Sports and Wii Play have also both moved up the chart from the previous week with 48,000 and 35,000 sales, respectively. In a week in which games on Nintendo formats accounted for all but five titles in the top thirty, the highest ranked PSP title was the budget re-release of Capcom’s Monster Hunter Portable 2 at number twenty-four. There were no Xbox 360 titles in the top fifty, with the only PlayStation 3 game once again being From Software’s role-playing title Enchant Arm. Hardware sales were also down across the board, compared to the previous week, with the Nintendo DS selling a total of 146,192. The Wii was down to 65,740 units in second place, with the PSP at 31,216 in third. Although overall sales were down for the format this week, the PlayStation 3 outsold the PlayStation 2 at 17,727 units to 17,540. The Xbox 360 sold 6,130 units, the Game Boy Advance family of consoles 1,802 and the GameCube 306.
