Japanese Hardware: DS Still On Top As 360 Stock Runs Out

The Nintendo DS is clinging on to the number one spot in the Japanese hardware sales charts, after long weeks of domination by the PSP, according to the latest Media Create-compiled statistics. Helped by a strong week of sales for Nintendo format titles and boosted by a three-day Japanese festival, the DS saw sales increase by over 18,000 units to 78,666. PSP sales were also up, by around 6,000 units, to 64,413. Although still unable to break out of third place, the Wii also saw a large increase in sales for the week, up around 14,500 units to 53,036. For the first time in several weeks, PlayStation 3 sales increased, but by less than 2,000 units to 11,393. The PlayStation 2 also saw an increase of almost exactly the same amount, to 10,168 units for the week. The Xbox 360 once again found itself in last place, although this time, it was due to a lack of stock rather than low demand. Microsoft has already indicated that it may take some time to replenish all channels. As it was sales fell from 24,962 units last week to 7,358 – although this is still well above the usual weekly average for the console. Overall in the top 50 game software titles, there were 28 titles for the Nintendo DS, 10 for the Wii, five for the PSP, three each for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2, and one for the Xbox 360.
