Japanese Hardware: Wii Leads PS3 For Seventh Consecutive Week

Handheld hardware easily captured the top sales slots in Japan over the last week, while the Nintendo Wii ruled home console sales, beating out PlayStation 3 for the seventh week in a row. The Nintendo Wii sold 19,386 units in Japan for the week ended June 21, up week-on-week from 18,442, according to Media Create. Sony's PS3 was the second-best selling piece of home gaming hardware with 10,359 sold, flat from the week prior. PS3 shook up the Japanese hardware sales charts in March and April, uncharacteristically outselling the Nintendo Wii during both months, thanks to high-profile releases. Sales of handheld DSi hardware led the overall hardware charts for the week, rising 9.7 percent week-on-week to 40,464. PSP sales rose 3.6 percent from the prior week to 27,884, capturing the second place spot for yet another week. Media create does not combine sales of the DSi and its predecessor DS Lite, the latter of which sold 5,531 during the week, bringing total DS line sales to 45,995. Xbox 360 unit sales dropped from a week prior, while PS2 sales were up by a couple hundred units.
