Japanese Sales Charts, Week Ending February 12

Japan has recorded its slowest week of sales so far this year, with the top-selling game recording just 72,290 units sold. At this time of year, though, such results are entirely expected, with the market further depressed by the almost total lack of Nintendo DS hardware to drive software sales. Nintendo’s English language training tool has remained at the number one spot despite the hardware stock problems, with the latest Brain Training game and Animal Crossing steadfast in the number two and three positions, respectively. The highest new entry was Sony’s survival horror sequel Siren 2 at number four with 49,780 unit sales, a fairly modest debut for a series which has just been signed for movie treatment by the director of Spider-Man 2. The only other new entry in the top ten was a Touch Generations style DS puzzle game from Namco, clearly designed to capitalize on the current Japanese craze for Brain Training titles. However, with sales of just 21,132 units, it seems unlikely to match the success of Nintendo’s own series. With the Nintendo DS recording its lowest ever sales figures this week in Japan, with just 10,223 units sold, the PSP has retained its lead this week with 24,977 units sold. So low have stock levels for the Nintendo DS become that for the first time in several months, the portable has also been outsold by the PlayStation 2, with 22,383 DS units sold. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles sold 8,489 units in total, with the GameCube selling 2,025 and the Xbox 360 recording its most miserable result yet in Japan, with just 1,288 units sold.
