Overall video game sales have again remained fairly static in Japan this week, with the top 100 titles selling 75 percent of the weekly average. However, with the main Japanese gift-giving holidays not occurring until January, the market does not follow quite the same trends as in the West. The top ranked title was the latest in the evergreen Mario Party series for GameCube, Mario Party 7, which sold 83,974 units, just short of the approximately 99,000 units of the previous iteration but a little more than Mario Party 5 at 83,000 units. Always popular with families at this time of year, the release of the game also saw GameCube console sales increase by a third, although with the format at an already low level, the effect on the overall market was minimal. The second highest new entry was Spike’s ninja-based action title Shinobido Imashime, with 48,760 unit sales, which came in ahead of Electronic Arts' NBA Live 06 with 20,883. The latter is one of the more successful performances ever for a Western sports title in Japan, where basketball is enjoying a significant upturn in popularity at the moment. There was little movement elsewhere in the chart, with Nintendo's mini-game collection Daredemo Asobi Taizen holding on strongly with 37,773 unit sales and looking increasingly likely to repeat the success of other Touch! Generations titles such as the Brain Training series. In hardware sales, there was again little change, with the Nintendo DS enjoying a 40.72 percent market share with 48,342 unit sales. The PSP was next with a 26.18 percent market share and 31,078 unit sales, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 16.24 percent with 19,277 sales. The Game Boy Advance family of products accounted for 13.07 percent of the market (Game Boy Micro: 9,151, Game Boy Advance SP: 6,143, Game Boy Advance: 227), the GameCube 3.68 percent and the Xbox 0.10 percent.
