As part of celebrations for the franchise’s twentieth anniversary, series creator Hideo Kojima has unveiled a number of new Metal Gear titles at a press event at the newly opened Ritz Carlton Hotel in Tokyo. Following in the wake of the well received online options in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Kojima announced a new PlayStation 3 exclusive title named Metal Gear Online. The game will use the same graphics engine as Metal Gear Solid 4 and is described as a “strategic multiplayer experience”. The game will feature playable characters and environments from Metal Gear Solid 4, which is now implied to be single player only. A closed beta test program for Metal Gear Online will begin this August in Japan for 3,000 people. Also newly announced, although previously hinted at, is Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus (MPO+) for the PSP. This new title is also multiplayer focused, with new stages and new characters taken from Metal Gear Solid 4, including Raiden and “Old Snake”. The game will include both Ad-Hoc and infrastructure based wireless play, as well as a new single player mode named Infinity Mission. The game is due for release next year. The evening also included a fifteen minute walkthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4, with a video of the presentation available at Kojima Production’s official website and as a free PlayStation Store download later this week. Also announced at the event was Metal Gear Solid Mobile for mobile phones and Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel for PSP – although neither title were confirmed for release outside of Japan.
