Microsoft, Xbox Technologies Settle Trademark Dispute

Microsoft has prevailed in its trademark-dispute case with software holding company Xbox Technologies over the use of the Xbox name for Microsoft's upcoming console.

While no details of the settlement were released, Xbox Technologies has agreed to change its name, although the company did not announce what the new name would be. The dispute between Microsoft and Xbox Technologies first arose last year, soon after Microsoft announced that its new console, which up to that point had been code-named Xbox, would in fact be called Xbox. Both parties filed claims with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to the name. A spokesman for Knowledge Mechanics, the main operation within Xbox Technologies, said, "Obviously it was a bit of an awkward situation for both companies.... We both thought we were entitled for the trademark rights. But this was a good way to resolve the issue."
