NewTek’s LightWave to Support Kaydara FBX Format NewTek and Kaydara have announced that NewTek will support the FBX 3D format in the next major release of LightWave. Kaydara’s FBX format provides a hub for the interchange of 3D data with a centralized working file type for content creators wishing to acquire, author, and re-purpose 3D and mixed-media data. NewTek’s adoption of FBX marks the first native support of FBX in a major 3D application, and will provide LightWave users with access to a wide variety of both new and legacy 3D content. “It has always been difficult for digital animators to re-purpose legacy material,” said Michel Besner, president of Kaydara. “The benefits of FBX as an interchange format will provide LightWave users with a valuable pipeline for sharing data and quickly re-targeting legacy content, saving them valuable time and streamlining their production.” For the past few years, the FBX interchange format has been an integrated component of FiLMBOX which includes support for Alias|Wavefront Maya, Discreet 3D Studio Max, NewTek’s LightWave and Softimage 3|D. The goal for Kaydara’s FBX initiative is to have more companies, such as NewTek, also support the FBX format natively, which will give users a wider range of interchange capabilities. FBX is natively supported by a variety of motion capture, 3D content and Web streaming vendors. FBX support will be available as an update for NewTek’s LightWave v6.5.
