Nvidia today announced a new family of integrated processors, the nForce2 Platform Processors, which are designed for PCs and motherboards using AMD Athlon XP and Duron processors. The new nForce2 family consists of two different processors: the nForce2 System Platform Processor (SPP) and the nForce2 Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP) -- each of which is paired with the nForce2 Media and Communications Processor (MCP).

  • The nForce2 SPP is targeted at system builders and channel and OEM manufacturers who don't require integrated graphics. It includes a dual DDR400 memory subsystem and an AGP 8X expansion slot.

    • The nForce2 IGP adds a GeForce4 MX graphics core to the SPP configuration. It supports Nvidia's Accuview Antialiasing Engine, MPEG2 and DVD decoding, a TV encoder, an HDTV processor, and multi-monitor support. Paired with the SPP and IGP is the nForce2 MCP, a networking processor that supports simultaneous LAN and WAN connections, handles up to six high-speed USB 2.0 and three FireWire (IEEE1394a) ports and handles audio processing -- including Dolby Digital encoding. Production of nForce2 Platform Processors is slated for late August.
