Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that its PlayStation 2 console recently reached 150 million units shipped worldwide. The console, which will celebrate its 11th birthday next month, is still shipping units even since its successor the PlayStation 3 was released just over four years ago. According to a statement from Sony, this milestone was reached as of January 31. The company puts the success down to strong support from third party developers and publishers, and exclusive blockbuster franchises such as Gran Turismo, God of War, Ratchet and Clank and SingStar. Sony also cited a number of key PS2 accessories and features, including the DualShock 2 controller, the EyeToy Camera, and the integrated DVD technology -- a first for game consoles. There are now more than 10,828 titles in the PS2 gaming library, with more than 1.52 billion software units shipped worldwide as of December 2010. SCE says that it will "continue to further expand the PlayStation platform and create a new world of computer entertainment." Earlier this month, Sony posted a rise in profit of 135 percent in its game division compared to the prior year. It forecast shipments of 15 million PlayStation 3s during fiscal 2011, ending in March this year. The Next Generation Portable, Sony's successor to the PlayStation Portable, was also unveiled recently at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 event in central Tokyo, and the joint venture Sony Ericsson recently revealed the Android-based Xperia Play mobile phone in conjunction with SCE.
