PlayStation exec: Dual support for PS4 and PS5 planned for 3 years

A translation of a AV Watch interview with SIE VP Hideaki Nishino (via TweakTown) reiterates that PlayStation's support for the PS4 won't immediately end with the launch of the PlayStation 5 this month.

"In terms of compatibility, it is important to move PS4 titles on PS5, but I have insisted that forward compatibility (supplying the same titles as PS5 to PS4) is important," Nishino tells AV Watch. "The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about three years."

He goes on to note that PlayStation approached developers to "develop on the premise of 'cross generation' of PS4 and PS5," which, like a years-long transition plan, aims to allay player concerns about their end-of-generation PlayStation 4 game purchases.

Nishino's comments to AV Watch mirror what we heard from SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan back in September about PlayStation seeing the PS4 community as an important part of its business for another three to four years.
