PS2 Improvement Fuels Sony Profits

Lessening Playstation 2 losses helped Sony turn a $127 million profit in its most recent fiscal quarter.

Massive PS2 launch costs pushed the company to a $295 million loss in the same period last year. Sales for the quarter topped $15 billion, up 16 percent from last year. Sales in the game sector reached $1.5 billion, an improvement of 24 percent from the same period last year. The company expects its Playstation 2 business to continue to improve in the fiscal year Sony began this month as more games hit the stores. “The big change in the year ahead is that the game business will start making profits,” said Sony’s Teruhisa Tokunaka.
