The PSP has gained its second Japanese number one seller with the release of Namco’s role-playing game Tales of Phantasia: Full Voice Edition. However, the game’s victory is less impressive than that of the first number one, Namco Bandai’s SD Gundam G Generation Portable in August. Not only is the game a port of an eleven year old SNES title but its first week sales are well below the usually hoped for milestone of 100,000 units for a number one title in Japan. Indeed, results are down across the board with no other new releases in the top ten, Namco’s drum based rhythm action game Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2, also on PSP, being the next highest new entry at number sixteen. With Pokemon Diamond/Pearl due for release at the end of the month this week’s results are certain to be only a minor lull in the market. Nevertheless, hardware sales have also been much reduced with the Nintendo DS selling almost exactly half the number of units as last week at 114,889. PSP sales rose slightly to 29,141, while all other formats fell including the PlayStation 2 at 19,882 and the Game Boy Advance family of consoles at 3,918. The Xbox 360 and GameCube both recorded new lows at 1,094 and 696 units, respectively.
