The final week of hardware sales in 2007 have seen the DS retain its regular place as the best selling console in Japan, although with two titles in the top ten, the PSP has surpassed the Wii for the week – despite a fall in sales for most formats.
Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending December 30th, following the belated release of the software top thirty yesterday. Although down on the previous week, hardware sales were still at a seasonal high with Nintendo DS sales falling by over 60,000 units and yet still managing a total for the week of 218,894. Despite the PSP having only four titles in the software top fifty, two of these are in the top ten. This has seen the format experience a far less precipitous drop in sales than its rivals, down only around 10,000 units to 161,370. The PSP’s success has forced the Wii into third place, with sales falling by more than 80,000 units to a still impressive 152,209. A clear divide still separates the top three selling formats from the rest of the market, although PlayStation 3 sales remained relatively steady – down around 5,000 units at 52,706. With the success of Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Gaiden at number one in the software charts PlayStation 2 sales actually rose by over 4,000 units to 25,569. Xbox 360 sales also rose, but only by a few hundred units to 8,304.
