With sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 down during the title’s second week, the PlayStation 3 has also relinquished its place as the best selling console in Japan - with its sister handheld the PSP regaining its former lead position.
Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending June 22nd, following details of the software top thirty. With sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 down during the title’s second week on sale, the PlayStation 3 has also relinquished its place as the best selling console in Japan. As such, the PSP has regained its former lead position, despite sales falling by over 5,000 units to 59,351. The Wii was the second best seller of the week, with its sales also showing a decrease of around 5,000 units for a total of 41,037. Nintendo DS sales fell by over 2,500 units to 36,599. Although the PlayStation 3 was back in fourth place, its sales were still around double that of its regular weekly average, down 55,000 units to a total of 20,336. PlayStation 2 sales fell by around 1,000 units to 6,346, while the Xbox 360 was the only format to register an increase – up a few hundred units to 2,555, despite not a single title in the software top fifty. Overall in the software sales top fifty, there were twenty-nine titles for the Nintendo DS, eleven for the Wii, five for the PSP, three for the PlayStation 2, two for the PlayStation 3 and none for the Xbox 360.
