Officials from Sony have announced that the newly redesigned PSP Slim and Lite console has sold over 1 million units in the two months since its successful launch in Japan – two weeks sooner than the original version of the console three years ago. As a result, the company is maintaining its forecasts of 10 million units of the PSP (both versions) sold worldwide by the financial year ending March 2008. This compares to Nintendo’s target of 28 million Nintendo DS. According to independent source Media Create, the launch of the PSP Slim and Lite coincided with a downturn in sales for both the Nintendo DS and Wii in Japan, with the PSP outselling its portable rival for two consecutive weeks and retaining a much higher weekly average ever since. However, apart from breakout titles Monster Hunter and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, software sales continue to track well below hardware. Last week, during the console’s best week of sales since the PSP Slim’s launch, there was not a single PSP title in the software top twenty.
