Saling The World: Mass Effect 2 Leads Domestic Multiplatform Sales

Gamasutra's latest custom compiled Amazon.com charts find BioWare's Mass Effect 2 heading software sales across all platforms in North America, as End of Eternity overtakes Final Fantasy XIII in Japan.

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide. This week's charts, with data taken from January 28th, 2010, find BioWare's Mass Effect 2 heading software sales across all platforms in North America, as End of Eternity overtakes Final Fantasy XIII in Japan. Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows: Nintendo Wii North America: 1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo), 2. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo), 3. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo), 4. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 5. Just Dance (Ubisoft). Japan: 1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo), 2. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 3. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo), 4. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo), 5. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo). UK: 1. Just Dance (Ubisoft), 2. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo), 3. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 4. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo), 5. EA Sports Active (Electronic Arts). New Super Mario Bros. Wii returns to the top of the charts in the United States after losing out to Just Dance last week, though Ubisoft's title remains the UK's biggest seller across all platforms for the second week in a row. New Super Mario Bros. Wii also leads this week's rankings in Japan, where Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart Wii continue to see strong sales. Xbox 360 North America: 1. BioWare's Mass Effect 2 heads multiplatform software sales in North America in its debut week. The original Mass Effect title sees a resulting sales boost, and finishes third in the regional Xbox 360 charts. The recently released Tri-Ace RPG End of Eternity tops the charts in Japan, meanwhile, as Mass Effect 2 edges out Modern Warfare 2 in the UK. PlayStation 3 North America: 1. Modern Warfare 2 overtakes God of War Collection in this week's U.S. sales results at Amazon, as Sony's massively multiplayer online shooter MAG takes third place in its premiere week. MAG also makes an impressive debut in Japan, where it finishes ahead of Final Fantasy XIII and End of Eternity to top the region's weekly sales charts. PlayStation 2 North America: 1. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (Atlus), 2. Kingdom Hearts (Square Enix), 3. Final Fantasy X (Square Enix), 4. Kingdom Hearts II (Square Enix), 5. Shadow of the Colossus (SCEA). Japan: 1. Hakuouki: Zuisouroku (Idea Factory), 2. Persona 4 (Atlus), 3. Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ (Square Enix), 4. Amagami (Enterbrain), 5. Little Busters! Converted Edition (Prototype). UK: 1. Persona 4 returns to the top of the PS2 charts in North America, thanks to a recent price drop. A trio of Square Enix-developed RPGs follow in its wake, as Sony's Shadow of the Colossus trails at fifth place. Persona 4 also remains a strong seller in Japan, while Sony's SingStar series accounts for the majority of platform sales in the UK. PC North America: 1. Mass Effect 2 (EA Games), 2. In Japan, Square Enix's remake of the classic RPG Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi trumps Nintendo's Tomodachi Collection, as Marvelous's Livly Garden takes fourth place in its debut week. Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep tops platform sales in Japan for the second week in a row, while Sega's Valkyria Chronicles sequel Senjou No Valkyria 2: Gallia Ouritsu Shikan Gakkou follows close behind.
