Interactive Data Visualization Inc. has announced that new licensees including Real Time Worlds, Larian Studios, and Bethesda Softworks have chosen the company's SpeedTree 'foliage-based middleware' for upcoming game titles. Dundee, Scotland-based Real Time Worlds was founded by Dave Jones, co-founder of DMA Design (now Rockstar North), and the original creator of Lemmings, Unirally, and Grand Theft Auto, and is working on at least two MMOs, evidently Western-developed and aimed at least partly at the Korean consumer. In announcing this deal, Real Time Worlds praised Speedtree's ability to give a good balance between dense tree populations and individual tree quality, as well as ease of incorporation into the pipeline and the large and ever-growing database of trees and plants. Other recently announced clients using SpeedTree include Larian Studios, original creators of Beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity, and Bethesda Softworks, who will implement SpeedTree into the upcoming next-generation console title The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
