London-based start-up TeePee Games has secured $500,000 in seed funding to develop its discovery portal designed to allow players to find social, Flash, and smartphone games. Its service is meant to provide a single place online where users can locate and store games across social networks, mobile game stores (e.g. Google Marketplace), and hundreds of thousands of Flash game sites. The portal will also integrate social features from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and MySpace. TeePee says it will enable casual game players to discover "the games best suited to their profile, cutting through the noise of app stores and top-ten lists." The company has already signed up "many games" for launch and is talking with developers and publishers across Facebook, mobile, and online Flash games. Former Player X CEO Tony Pearce is heading up the company, and he's joined by game industry veterans like board chairman Nick Alexander, formerly CEO at Sega Europe; chief commercial officer Simon Jones, previously managing director of Game Jacket; and non-executive director Charles McLeod, who was managing director at Metaflow. "The problem is very clear, game players are simply not finding new games because the top 20 dominates each category," says Pearce. "TeePee Games has built an incredible discovery engine, a cross between Amazon’s recommendation engine and Apple Genius." He adds, "[The service] learns and grows with the user, building a detailed profile of what the user has played across different gaming platforms and in turn recommends the ‘best in class’ games content, selected for them personally."
