THQ, Syfy To Produce Red Faction TV Movie

Publisher THQ and cable television network Syfy are collaborating on a two-hour made-for-television movie to debut alongside the release of Volition's Red Faction: Armageddon next March.

Publisher THQ and cable television network Syfy are collaborating on a two-hour made-for-television movie to debut alongside the release of Volition's Red Faction: Armageddon next March. Red Faction: Origins, the film's working title, is set after the events of last year's Red Faction: Guerrilla, and will set the stage of Mars for Armageddon. Its story was developed by Paul De Meo, writer of the 1991 film The Rocketeer as well as several James Bond video games, and currently THQ's fiction development director. The screenplay is being written by television and comic book writer Andrew Kreisberg, whose credits include Boston Legal, The Simpsons, Fringe, and The Vampire Diaries. No director has yet been named. "Twenty-five years have passed since Alec Mason led the Martian Colonies to freedom…and ten years since vengeful enemies killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter Lyra, and left a broken hero in their wake," today's press release points out. Mason's son Jake is the protagonist in Origins, and apparently "must now battle the relentless regime and somehow reunite a family torn apart by war." Last year's Red Faction Guerrilla received generally positive reviews, in large part due to its impressively destructible architecture. THQ exec Danny Bilson says Red Factions: Origins is "one of many strategic initiatives in place to dramatically increase awareness for Red Faction: Armageddon and extend the Red Faction brand across a wide variety of entertainment channels." "THQ is blazing a new trail in the gaming industry with our partnership with Syfy by introducing the Red Faction franchise to a new and broader audience," he claims.
