Publisher THQ has secured the rights to publish a Voltron game, based on the classic 80s children's TV series. The cartoon is due for a reboot later this year, with a new animated series called Voltron Force. Production company Classic Media has stated that the timing of the game's release will coincide with the new TV show. The game will be based on the original Voltron: Defender of the Universe 80s series, rather than the new Voltron Force episodes. Toy manufacturer Mattel will also be producing toys based on the new Voltron Force series, due for release in 2012. Vice president at World Events Productions Robert Koplar said of the deal: "The video games relationship with THQ, along with our master toy relationship with Mattel, signals the exciting future ahead for Voltron". "With its signature robot lion action and titanic-scale battles, our Voltron games and toys along with our new series are sure to have enormous appeal to fans of all ages around the world." It was revealed last week that Activision is also looking to revive its Spyro franchise via the collaboration of virtual gaming and toys. Collectible Spyro toys will be readable by a new game called Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, by placing them on a "Portal of Power" accessory. Players can collect the toys and then play as those characters in the game world.
