Top-Grossing iTunes Apps: Free-to-Play Tap Zoo Challenges Angry Birds

Apple's latest U.S. App Store game charts-by-revenue show Tap Zoo and Angry Birds Seasons leading iPhone sales, while Rock Band Reloaded emerges as a top seller on the iPad.

[Each week, sister iPhone and iPad site FingerGaming rounds up the top-grossing iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad applications, as current that day in the iTunes App Store, and this chart is now available on Gamasutra.] This week's U.S. revenue charts see Tap Zoo and Angry Birds Seasons leading iPhone sales, while Rock Band Reloaded emerges as a top seller on the iPad. These charts allow end users to see who is making the most money on the App Store that day. It differs significantly from the Top 10 Games chart, which is ranked by sales, and therefore is dominated by lower-priced titles that sell more copies. Data comes courtesy of Apple's public sales information. All titles in the App Store's "Games" category are considered in chart rankings. This week's top-grossing iPhone titles are: 1. Angry Birds Seasons ($0.99) 2. Angry Birds ($0.99) 3. Tap Zoo (Free) 4. Smurfs' Village (Free) 5. Kingdoms at War (Free) 6. Zombie Farm (Free) 7. Texas Poker (Free) 8. Bakery Story (Free) 9. World War (Free) 10. Cut the Rope ($0.99) Zynga's FarmVille disappears from the top ten after climbing up to third place last week, though plenty of other microtransaction-supported games report top earnings in its absence. Streetview Labs' Tap Zoo finishes as today's highest-grossing free-to-play game, while Rovio's Angry Birds and the recently released Angry Birds Seasons lead overall chart results. Capcom's Smurfs' Village and A Thinking Ape's Kingdoms at War also rank among this week's top earners based on microtransaction sales, as Storm8's free multiplayer online game World War returns after a long absence to finish behind TeamLava's Bakery Story at ninth place. Here are this week’s top-grossing iPad applications: 1. Angry Birds Seasons HD ($1.99) 2. Angry Birds HD ($4.99) 3. Scrabble for iPad ($9.99) 4. Smurfs' Village (Free) 5. Bakery Story (Free) 6. Pictureka! for iPad ($4.99) 7. Rock Band Reloaded for iPad ($9.99) 8. Plants vs. Zombies HD ($9.99) 9. Cut the Rope HD ($1.99) 10. Real Racing HD ($9.99) Angry Birds Seasons also claims the top spot in today's iPad results, leading over former chart leaders Angry Birds HD and Scrabble for iPad. Smurfs' Village and Bakery Story also emerge as top microtransaction earners on the iPad, as EA earns two spots in today's chart with its recent releases Pictureka! and Rock Bna Reloaded.
