The first UK sales chart of 2009 has seen Nintendo's Wii Play take the top spot for the first time since February 2008. The hardware bundle’s chart position is usually a reliable indicator of stock availability for the Wii console. With no major shortages reported over the Christmas period, it seems the console has remained relatively easily available for the whole of 2008 in the UK. The number one title in the all-platform chart is FIFA 09, moving up one place from Call of Duty: World at War. However, on both top tens, the various titles have only shuffled a few positions at most, with most major changes due to stock issues or retailer promotions. As such, stock renewals see Wii Fit move up nine places to number nine in the individual platform chart, while continued widespread discounting for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games on the Wii sees it rise five places to number four. There is only one new entry in the charts this week, with Nintendo’s 100 Classic Book Collection on Nintendo DS debuting at number 17. Heavily advertised on television, the new Touch! Generations title was actually released on December 26th (the Boxing Day public holiday n the UK). Overall in the top 40, there are 12 titles each for the Wii and Xbox 360, with nine for the PlayStation 3, six for the Nintendo DS, one for the PC and none for the PlayStation 2 and PSP.
