Chart compiler Enterbrain has updated an earlier report by confirming that Nintendo's Wii console has now sold over 3 million copies in Japan, compared to just over 1 million of Sony's PlayStation 3. The previous statistics were compiled for the week ending July 8th, and showed 2.9 million units of Nintendo's next-gen console sold in Japanese territories. But a new statement released by the Famitsu publisher, one of two chart compilers in the territory, has confirmed 3.01 million hardware units sold as of July 15th. In addition, the firm revealed that an impressive 18.1 million units of Nintendo's DS console have been sold since the handheld's release in Japan in December 2004, with the dual-screen handheld still the best-selling game hardware in the territory, as it has been for the vast majority of time since its launch. Though showing dominance worldwide, Nintendo's hardware is particularly popular in Japan, where the most recent Media Create charts have shown 139,286 weekly sales of the DS and 75,279 of the Wii, compared to 32,946 for the PSP, 14,120 for the PlayStation 3 and just 2,370 for the Xbox 360. An update on the U.S. game hardware sales market is also due later today, as the NPD results for June are scheduled to debut after market close.
