New figures from German analyst group GfK indicate that the Xbox 360 has sold over 30,000 units in its first four days on sale, beating the PSP's previous hardware launch record in the country by 3,000 units. After considerable delay, brought on by global shortages of the Xbox 360 hardware, the Australian launch of the system did not take place until March 23rd. According to GfK statistics, an average of 2.6 games were sold with each console, totalling an average purchase spend of AUS$960 (USD$675) for early adopters. The GfK figures, which account for approximately 90 per cent of the retail market, also indicate that around 10,000 units were sold at the Australian midnight launch event. According to Microsoft Australia Xbox director David McLean, as quoted by website AustralianIT, the company expect to “easily reach our launch window forecast”. The “vast majority” of early sales were reported to be for the non-Core package featuring a bundled hard drive, with McLean stating that pre-sale orders for the console accounted for as many as 45,000 units. Proportionally, Australia was Microsoft’s most successful market for the original Xbox, but the extended delay for the Xbox 360 does not so far seem to have dampened interest in the brand.
