Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
In an interview with Reuters, Robbie Bach of Micrsoft's Xbox division reported that the console increased its marketshare, and claimed the second position in the U.S. and European markets over the 2002 holiday season, behind the PS2.
Bach said that over 8 million Xbox units have been sold worldwide: 5.4 million units in North America, 1.8 million in Europe and 850,000 in the Asia-Pacific region. Over 250,000 of the Xbox Live starter kits have been sold so far. Responding to rumors that have circulated about Microsoft's possible acquisition of Sega and other large game companies, Bach dismissed the idea. He said Microsoft is more interested in small, privately-held developers. On a related note, Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer, John Connors, cautioned that the company's revenues in the current quarter would be $7.7-$7.8 billion, off of the $8 billion most analysts had expected. In explaining the lower guidance, he said the global game market is softer than expected that the Xbox would bring in less revenue as a result.
