Dive Deep into Medieval History with Slitherine’s New "A Lens On: Snapshot" Video Series

Slitherine Software, the publisher behind Field of Glory: Kingdoms, has launched a new documentary series designed to bring Medieval history to life. Hosted by Medieval Historian and Research Impact Specialist Dr. Claire Kennan, A Lens On: Snapshot explores the rich historical context that shapes Field of Glory: Kingdoms, with its first two topics focusing on Medieval medicine and Hierarchy and Livelihood. The first five episodes of the series can now be found on Slitherine’s YouTube channel.

First Topic: Medieval Medicine

Episode 1: Medicine and astrology in Middle Age: False Beliefs?
The first episode delves into the strong ties that existed between astrology and Medieval medicine. One interesting tidbit is that by law medical practitioners had to assess the position of the moon before carrying out complicated procedures.  
 
Episode 2: What's the role of Monasteries in the Middle Age?
Medieval monasteries were crucial for the safekeeping and transmission of medical knowledge. Episode 2 explores how these monasteries were deeply involved in medical learning and even touches on the origin of the word hospital.
 
Episode 3: Plague and Black Death: what's the cause?
The third episode of the series focuses on one of the most famous and deadly epidemics of all of history and the various factors that led to its mass outbreak.
 
Episode 4:  What were the misconceptions during Middle Ages?
Episode 4 covers some popular misconceptions that people have around Medieval medicine. Was human dissection banned outright? Did Medieval people really smell that badly? You’ll have to tune in to find out.
 
Second Topic: Hierarchy and livelihood

Episode 1: Structure of the Medieval society
This episode explores the lives of Medieval peasants and serfs, the foundation of feudal society. From freemen with limited autonomy to serfs bound by debt and servitude, it examines their daily struggles, labour obligations, and the rigid social structure that defined their existence.

What is Field of Glory: Kingdoms

Field of Glory: Kingdoms is a grand strategy title from award-winning studio AGEOD which was released in June 2024. The game immerses players in a historical world where they can lead any of 20 diverse nations, each with unique cultural traits, religions, and strategic opportunities. Set in 1054, just after the Great Schism, it encompasses more than two centuries of epic European, African, and Middle Eastern history.
