Helvetii Soundtrack by Dale North and Emi Evans Now Available

The score is at times dark and ominous, and at others, beautiful and serene. North--best known for past works including RWBY: Arrowfell, Wizard of Legend, Dreamscaper, and Nintendo Minute--infuses electronic elements into a lush orchestral score, prominently featuring vocalist Emi Evans, who's best known for her work on NieR, Dark Souls, Ace Combat, and Star Wars: Visions. Specifically, Evans prepared lyrics in Gaulish. The Helvetii (Original Game Soundtrack) is available on all digital music storefronts and streaming platforms today and can be bundled with the game on Steam:

"Since a part of the creative process was about reinventing a mythology, I wanted to go with something that was a bit more unexpected than traditional Celtic music," reflects Kevin Peclet of developer Team KwaKwa. "For instance, some tracks make use of distorted and oppressive electronic vibes to reinforce a sense of unease and 'otherness' in certain scenarios, which is contrasted with tracks that give a reprieve or sense of awe for the player. Emi Evans's contributions played a major role in making those tracks sound grand as well as melancholic."
 
″It was really fascinating to research into the extinct language of Gaulish in order to write the lyrics for Helvetii," comments vocalist Emi Evans. "With no footage of native speakers available, it was quite a challenge to imagine how it might have been pronounced! Thanks to the beautifully-crafted music from Dale North, each track came to life with its own character as I was recording. I am very excited for this soundtrack to be heard!″
 
"It's rare to feel this encouraged to dig down deep and musically explore a world, but with Helvetii I was given full license to get lost in it," adds composer Dale North. "The goal was to create something fantastic and awe-inspiring, but rather than shift between those energies, I put forth that we could just continually combine the entire emotional range for all of the music of Helvetii. So while melodies expressed by strings and pianos and accented by Emi Evans's lovely voice float above, heavier energy underpins it all using 1980s-era samplers for dirt and grit, with lots of resampling and distortion to create twisted, gnarly rhythmic bed. I hoped to reinterpret the mythology of the world with raw sound and I hope that comes through in the work."
 
Helvetii is a character-action game set in Gallic Celtic mythology. Players challenge the ever-changing rot with three characters, use gifts and powers bestowed by primal deities, and show their mastery of combat by pummeling, juggling and slamming enemies in a gorgeous 2D presentation. The story takes place at around 100BC in Gaul following young war chief Divico's victory over the Roman legion after a pact that yielded great power but also a terrible curse: an ever-spreading rot crawling through his land and slowly corrupting his mind and heart. With the help of the trusted yet reclusive druid Nammeios and the curious half-beast Renart, Divico sets his journey to undo the source of the rot and restore what was lost inside him. Helvetii is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Steam starting Friday, February 3, 2023.

About Dale North Dale North is a composer, arranger, and orchestrator for videogames, based in San Diego. As a multi-instrumentalist (piano, vocal, brass), performer, and singer- songwriter with an international training, he brings a unique voice to videogame music.
