YouTube Video of Cortex 0.0.2 Alpha

From time to time I will try and release video of Neuron’s Cortex engine in action. This will allow you to see the progress over time instead of reading about it. So with that I thought I would release a video of the very first stages of the game engine. This video is from a version a long while back, and we have progressed significantly past this point; however, it is nice to see the beginning. So this is Alpha 0.0.2 or the second non-release version of the engine. The reason why 0.0.1 won’t be shown is due to its lack of content. It barely did anything at all but displays a black screen with a single sprite image as a background in full screen. This version has a couple of interesting features at this point which are:

  1. Individual sprites with individual intelligence for movement.

  2. Individual instances of the same sprite (more than one of the same)

  3. Frame rate regulation on a sprite by sprite and instance by instance basis. Meaning that any particular sprite instance can be dialed to a specified frame rate.

  4. Sprite transparency with alpha blending.

  5. Instance animation sequencing. Each instance can have it's animation style set. There are several options such as play_once, repeat, ping_pong...

That is pretty much it, oh and that it doesn’t crash. :-) Also, keep in mind that the only original content is the silver loopy things. For the background I searched for screen shots of one of my favorite old games, Space Quest I, and got a SVGA snapshot I resized. For the dice, I just wanted a sprite with varied degrees of transparency so I searched for PNG images on Google and the dice was the first one that appealed to me for the test simply because it has fuzzy edges and multiple colored transparencies.
