Is the PS4 Pro changing the way developers create console games?

Now that both major video game consoles have multiple iterations of the same generation out in the market, traditional console game development soon might start looking more like PC development.

Are you still figuring out what the announcement of the PS4 Pro means for your company? A new video from game dev 101 show Extra Credits suggests that the recent release of the PS4 Pro could mean developers will soon be treating console game development more like creating games for PC.

As the video (seen above) explains, the introduction of a more powerful PS4 may open the door to more PC-like development for consoles.

This is because the marginal upgrades to the system may create a need for developers to create games with the power of the PS4 Pro in mind, but also make sure they can downscale things like graphics and lighting quality to make new games playable on older systems.

Extra Credits' take on the subject is interesting because it's one of the few we've seen that indicates developers will be making a dedicated land grab for the PS4 Pro's advanced hardware, and treats the possibility of games not working on older PS4 systems as more of a reality then a nebulous possibility.

Sony is adamant that the original PS4 won’t be pushed out of the picture completely—any game released for the PS4 console generation must work on all phases of the system—but, as Extra Credits points out, that doesn’t mean games developed explicitly with the PS4 Pro in mind will run as smoothly or look quite as good on the older system.
