"What I hope people remember, and what I've been focusing on since yesterday, are not the games of Mythic, but rather the teams that made them."

- Mythic Entertainment co-founder and former general manager Mark Jacobs shares his thoughts on the legacy of the recently-shuttered studio. Electronic Arts announced that it was shutting down Mythic Entertainment earlier this week, and today Eurogamer published a remarkable eulogy on the studio's legacy and staff written by Mythic co-founder Mark Jacobs. Jacobs founded the studio that would become Mythic Entertainment in 1995 with Rob Denton and helped lead it until 2009, when he left as part of an EA restructuring initiative that saw Mythic merged with BioWare to become, for a brief period, BioWare Mythic. During his time at Mythic Jacobs oversaw development of some of the studio's most notable games, including the MMORPGs Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online. His eulogy speaks well of everyone who worked with him at the studio during his tenure, and he takes special pains to laud the skill and effort displayed by developers in releasing games before they were ready -- and then paying the price for it. "In only three years, and with crunches that were even worse than during the Dark Age of Camelot development cycle, they created a terrific, albeit flawed, MMORPG," wrote Jacobs of the team that worked on Warhammer Online after EA acquired Mythic in 2006. "The flaws were not of their making. As I've said before, the flaws and premature release rested with senior management (including myself) at both Mythic and EA but ultimately, members of that team paid the price." Jacobs writes at length about the people he worked with and the games they made during his tenure at Mythic in the full eulogy, which you can read over on Eurogamer.
