Mark Zuckerberg briefly teased a new VR headset during the Oculus Connect keynote earlier today. The prototype, described as a middle ground between the PC-tethered Oculus Rift and the smartphone powered Gear VR, is a standalone, wireless device capable of inside-out positional tracking.

Such a headset would enable developers to create VR games without many of the limitations currently imposed by PC and smartphone powered devices. This technology would seemingly exist in the sweet spot between company's two existing devices by combining the mobility of Gear VR with a level of in-game movement and interactivity closer to that of the Rift.

A short video demo showed a user wearing the headset while walking around a virtual environment, without the need for any external connections or hardware. Zuckerberg didn’t have much to say about how the technology works or when we can expect to see it release.

“We’re working on this,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s still early. We don’t want to get your hopes up. We have a demo. We don’t have a product yet.”
