SNES games are coming to Nintendo's Virtual Console -- but only on New 3DS

Super Nintendo games like Super Mario World will be coming to the company's Virtual Console service -- but only on its New Nintendo 3DS family of portable consoles.

Nintendo published a new Nintendo Direct video today which included the announcement that emulated Super Nintendo games will be coming to the company's Virtual Console service -- but only on its New 3DS family of portable consoles.

This is chiefly notable for developers with an interest in playing/studying Super Nintendo games, as Nintendo is moving to make Super Mario WorldPilotwings and F-Zero available for sale on the platform today.

The venerable game maker plans to continue adding SNES games from its catalog to the platform in the weeks ahead: Super Mario KartEarthBound and Donkey Kong Country are slated to go live on March 24th, while The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest will be made available on April 14th.
