The Independent Games Festival organizers (part of the CMP Game Group, as is Gamasutra) have announced that, in collaboration with the 8th Annual Independent Games Festival (IGF), major consumer game site GameSpot is now hosting the voting for the 2006 IGF Audience Award. From February 22nd through March 17th, gamers are encouraged to vote for their favorite indie game from a pool of 19 IGF Main Competition finalists which are hosting PC demo versions online at the official IGF Audience Award page. Many of the demo versions of the acclaimed PC indie titles which have become IGF finalists are available for download for the first time. The overall winner which receives the most votes will receive a $2,500 prize and the IGF Audience Award for 2006. In addition, details on IGF's inaugural Modding Competition and noted Student Showcase finalists are also featured on GameSpot, with information on each of the titles and links to download versions of the games, which are not part of the voting for this particular award. "GameSpot reaches more than a million avid, influential gamers daily," noted IGF Chairman Simon Carless. "By hosting the voting for the IGF Audience Award, the site exposes this vast audience to the creativity and innovation indie gaming is known for, and gives these games the chance to garner mass popularity and publisher interest." The winner of the Audience Award will be revealed alongside the other award winners at the IGF Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Wednesday, March 22nd at the San Jose Civic Auditorium during the 2006 Game Developers Conference. More information on the finalists is available at the official IGF website.
