What were your goals when designing Gaia’s Vengeance?
ANSWER: We wanted Gaia’s Vengeance to feel magical and mystical. Something ancient and powerful that draws its power deep from an enchanted forest. We don’t have a lot of skins that are delicate and beautiful—the closest would probably be Sovereign. But unlike Sovereign, the tone for Gaia’s Vengeance is a bit somber. This is probably most obvious through the audio for the Finisher and the Kill Banner. We could have made a skin line based on a forest theme and taken it in a lot of directions, but the team found this really wonderful blend of mysterious, magical, intricate, and powerful. We named the skin after we’d completed work on it, so at that point we really felt its balance of elegance and danger—a kind of haunting beauty.

What did you take inspiration from / any notable concepts you wanted to convey with Gaia’s Vengeance?
ANSWER: We were initially inspired by an old concept of a weapon made up of white roots and red crystals, which we thought had a lot of potential for a skin line. It reminded us of ancient, magical forests from fairytales, books, fantasy films, art, and games.

Any unexpected challenges or novelty stories you'd like to share when designing Gaia’s Vengeance?
ANSWER: This skin was initially planned to ship without any features, so no reload/equip/inspect effects, Audio, Finisher, Kill Banner, or anything like that. However, the team was really excited about the skin and we saw a lot of potential, so we decided to delay shipping the skin and instead rework the concept to fit a more ambitious idea. We even went far enough to model a tree for the Finisher, which we then decided to customize so that each Variant has its own custom Finisher! We also utilized some custom crystal materials for the base skin and the Variants to bring the magical elements of the skin to life.
